WHEN SHE WAS FIFTY-SEVEN, Anna Meyers, my friend and colleague of almost thirty years, was diagnosed with what would turn out to be terminal cancer. In the months that followed, she simultaneously embraced every effort to keep herself alive and took the steps necessary to prepare for her death.
