I KNOW A LOT ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS—BOTH PERSONALLY and professionally—and the two parts of my life are closely intertwined. The personal aspect is that I’m a person with schizophrenia. This part of my life started officially in 1966, when I was twenty-five years old. It was during my fourth year in the U.S. Marine Corps, and I was a guard officer at a naval air station in Florida.
